FAQ

The Large Stock Auction (Steers, Hogs, Lambs, Market Goats) starts at 11:45 AM on Saturday, April 27, 2024.

The Small Stock Auction (Poultry, Pigeons, Rabbits, Cavies, Pygmy Goats) starts at 10:30 AM on Sunday, April 28, 2024. Both auctions are held in conjunction with the Pima County Fair.

The process is easy!

  1. Come to the live auction at the Pima County Fairgrounds! Get there early!
  2. Register at the auction table (between the ramada and indoor arena) and receive your number.
  3. During the auction, bid on the animals you wish to buy.
  4. If you win the bid, you will be presented with a sales contract and decide what you want done with the animal.
  • Processed Animal:  Pick a processing company from the sale program. Processor will pick up the animal from the auction and contact you for cutting instructions, collect processing payment, and arrange meat pickup.
  • Consign to Packer/Resell:  If you wish to help a 4-H or FFA member, but do not want to keep the processed meat, you can consign to the packer. You agree to pay the difference between final selling price (the price you bid) and current market prices (floor price posted in the sale program) for steers, lambs, goats, or hogs.
  • Resell & Donate Proceeds:  Have the animal sold to the packer with proceeds sent to the organization of your choice.
  • Take Home for Personal Use:  You may take the animal home yourself from the Pima County Fairgrounds after 6:00 PM on 4/28/2024. (This option is not available for the Grand or Reserve Champion animals).
  • Process:  Top Knot Farms has been contracted to process meat birds. Exhibitors will pay for the processing charges. You will receive an email as to where and when to pick up your processed animal.
  • Donate back to exhibitor:  If you wish to help a 4-H or FFA member, but do not want to keep the animal, you may donate the animal back to the exhibitor.
  • Keep for Personal Use:  Animals will need to be picked up in the livestock barn between 6-7 PM on 4/28/2024.  Note: Terminal animals should be processed in a timely manner; Poultry broilers/fryers should be processed by 5/2/2024 to ensure quality of meat and health of birds.

All of the animals raised by 4-H and FFA members for the Pima County Fair are from top stock and fed high quality rations.

Steers:

  • 1100 lb live weight steer will yield between 450 – 470 lbs of packaged meat

Hogs:

  • 240 lb live weight hog will yield between 115 – 120 lbs of packaged meat

Lambs and Goats:

  • 135 lb live weight lamb will yield between 45 – 50 lbs of packaged meat
  • 90 lb live weight goat will yield between 30 – 35 lbs of packaged meat

The processing cost is in addition to your winning bid for the animal and paid directly to the processing company.

Your decision to purchase an animal through this auction can help a young person successfully complete a unique learning experience. Youth who raise an animal in the 4-H/FFA programs have chosen a challenging way to better themselves.

Members of the 4-H and FFA programs make a commitment to feed and care for their project animals to learn the desirable traits in the species they raise, and how to exhibit in the show ring. Additionally, youth gain business experience as they manage the funds needed to purchase, feed, and care for the project animal and as they keep records on growth, expenses, and income.
